"For whether we are white or copper skinned
We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains
We need to paint with all the colors of the wind.

You can own the Earth and still
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind."

This is actually the first time I am trying to paint in a more manga-ish style! ^^ It was really much fun! :D I was kinda inspired by the art of *sakimichan, who is one of my fav artists! :) I hope you all like it! I know that my depiction of her might differ from the Disney original version, but I like to interprete characters the way I see them! ;)

Favs and comments/critiques are highly appreciated! :la:

Thank you for everything! :D

:iconsanguisgelidus: Watch me for more! :D :la:

This interpretation is very pretty ^^ you did a great job on her face and hair. Her skin appears to me to be too light to be Native American and it looks very caucasian even with how you have the lighting. I am far from an expert on anatomy but her arm in this picture seems a bit long. In the position that her arm is her hand would not be able to reach that far. With how she is positioned here her hand would be right in front of her right breast. Her bicep and elbow would have to be moving inward towards her body more I think. Also there should be more of a crease where her forearm goes into the bicep because her arm is bent and the muscles are folding together.

The line defining her breasts seems a bit strange but that may just be me.

I hope this was helpful and if I'm wrong in my interpretation I apologize, (which it's possible I am) these were just some things that I noticed that seemed off. Still, lovely piece and wonderful use of lighting.

This is beautiful. The your technique is amazing. I love the colors you used in the background, It makes pocahonts stand out. The only thing that I disliked is how she looks more white than 'copper' and her face shape makes her seem less native american, But those are small details that don't matter that much. The light shimmering off her skin is amazing, and is very well done. I've seen many attempts at drawing pocahontas, but this is one of the most stunning. The soft coloring also made it more prettier. Words really can't describe how awesome this is. Keep up the good work!

you should check out Lily-san's art. She's real good. They look very realistic (At least to me they do).

Thank you for depicting her with dark brown wavy hair instead of stark black straight hair. The wavy is better suited to the region and tribe she would have been a part of (our tribes share Iroquois language roots). The stark black hair is more typical of the southwest tribes.

This looks very good! I love the colouring as usual, the only thing I would suggest would be changing her facial structure a bit- she looks more like a westerner, and doesn't resemble Pocahontas.

You know, I wonder why Disney doesn't use Pocahontas much. I see so much of Cinderella, Ariel, and Jasmine, but no Megara, Pocahontas, or Mulan. Dunno why.
FirstDarkAngel2001 Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2013  Student Digital Artist
unfortunately, Meg and Mulan aren't considered as princesses based on their storylines, which bites a big one in it's own right. They're also starting to use Tiana a little more too, which is really a bug. The only time they have Mulan and Pocahontas are really in just the collection dolls. I barely see a hair of Meg anymore, too. Alice actually got more face time with things than her, and it was never actually stated of if she was a princess[other than in Kingdom Hearts, in which case every world had to have it's own princess], or just a noblewoman.

Yeah, it's unfortunate that they get cast to the side.  Even amongst Nintendo ladies, no one knows who Rosalina is.  It's like, Daisy got kidnapped once in a game Boy game and is now merely spinoff material, but Rosalina is the central character of arguably the most important Mario game since 64, one knows her.

But at least even she's more well known than Pauline.  Poor Pauline.
FirstDarkAngel2001 Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2013  Student Digital Artist
yeah. Kida, after the first Atlantis movie, had only maybe one or two things, and then was forgotten about. No one even knew about her enough for the second movie to even be a bother to many of the people that had seen the original one. T^T sooo many princesses are passed up, and so when I see those that are being made known, and more so some of them being turned twisted like what jeftoon01 is doing, I naturally have to give massive props. ^^

Who's Jeftoon01?
FirstDarkAngel2001 Featured By Owner Sep 13, 2013  Student Digital Artist
a deviantartist on here that has a twisted princess gallery. It includes Kida within it, and the artist spoke of adding more to it. It even has the blue fairy from Pinocchio. XD in total currently there's 19 different ones in his gallery.

i.... I'm just saying this because there's so much hating about her skin colour here but uh...

guys really, even if you complain, do you think the guy will go back and start repainting her? =.= it's his choice to interpret what she will look like -__- if you don't like it, then don't look at it! no one forced you, sheesh =.=.=

I,for one, really like this new style! Experimenting is always good :) I love what you did with her hair and expressions. I do not care for the color of her skin being "different" (don't really understand why everyone is making a fuss over it...ultimately it's YOUR interpretation of her just in YOUR OWN style) lol I do love the contrast of the bg being dark one side and light on the other. She does look delicate but it works very well with the composition and the flower you added in her hair. She absolutely looks like a Chief's daughter here and reminds me of Tiger Lily from the Jungle Book crossed with Mononoke - more in tune with nature and beautiful.

Please don't let the negative comments get to you because you inspire thousands of us here on DA! even silent followers such as myself admire you a ton:nod: Keep up the great work! I look forward to seeing more of your new works in different styles.

Also one other thing.... Judging by your replies (Sangius), I really think you should learn to take negative comments easier... It comes off as rude to tell people "Well if you don't like the way I interpreted her, then you could just draw her yourself." Um.... If you don't like a comment, you don't need to feel obligated to reply. And if you *do* want to reply, simply take the criticism, constructive or not. Not everyone is going to like everything you draw (that's just life), but there's no reason to be just as rude as some people were to you.

Anyway, nice work on the color. Everything else..... well, just read my other comment :///
